Added 18 of February 2009 (628 views)

When setting up a wireless internet connection there are steps you must follow, assuming you are using a Windows based operating system.

The first Step is to ensure that you have the appropiate equipment needed to connect wirelessly to the Internet. You must have a Broadband Internet Connection, a wireless router, and a computer (PC or Laptop) with wireless networking support already installed or a wireless adapter.

The second Step is to connect your wireless router. You must take your cable or DSL modem and connect it to the router while making sure you are still connected to the Internet. A typical installation would include the cable or DSL line from the wall going into your cable modem. The modem is then connected to the router and the router will send the signal to the adapter or the previously installed networking system within your laptop or PC.

Our next Step is for those who are networking saavy very easy or for some not so, you are more than welcome to skip this step and contact the manufacturer technical support for expert advice on their equipment. If you are the saavy or not, you would need to name your network. Naming your network distinguishes it from anyone else within the range of your wireless signal. This is to help you know which to connect to and it also necessary for security purposes as you would also want to make sure that protect it with a password.

The encryption type is totally up to you and your computing needs, but make sure it is one that is unique and hard for someone to hack. It is not that you dont trust your neighbors, but we all lock up our houses and cars, this is no different. After you have made the decision on your encryption type and password write them down in a safe place and save them.

The last Step in this process is Connect to the network.

XP users would need to double click the network icon, then Wireless Networks, this will take open a window prompting them to choose a wireless network from the list. Once your network in the name choosen appears put in your password and connect.

Vista users should open up their menu from the Start button and choose Connect to. A window should open with the words Select a Network to Connect to, your network should appear and after choosing it, type in your password and connect.

If you have purchased a network adapter for your hardware, your instructions are slightly different. You should place the adapter into an open PC slot and install the software, usually accompanied within the package purchased. There will be step by step instructions for installation and then you are able to connect using the previous instructions, per your operating system.
